TUCSON, AZ- In honor of our seniors, each day for this week leading up to their final regular season match we will have a Q&A with each of them.

Akilah James

Q. When did you fall in love with the sport of tennis?

A. When I was really young, like 2 or 3. My older brother played tennis and I loved to watch him play and then just went with it.

Q. What would be an example of a day in your life as a young girl?

A. Nothing special really. I would wake up, get ready for school, after school I went and played tennis, then I would come home and do homework, eat dinner, and go to bed.

Q. What was your first impression of Head Coach Vicky Maes?

A. I thought she was tough stuff. I knew she was tough. She was really nice and sweet and cool, but I knew she was tough inside. She seemed like she cared about the team atmosphere and that’s what really drew me in about her.

Q. What does your ideal opponent play like?

A. I like right-handed players. I also like for someone to be aggressive, I like when they come to the net.

Q. Who is your favorite team to play during the season?

A. ASU – also the California schools, because you have nothing to lose. But our rival school is just one that you always look forward to.

Q. Do you have any siblings?

A. One younger sister Aniyah and one older brother Kareem

Q. What is your greatest accomplishment as a tennis player so far?

A. One of my greatest accomplishments was winning the key to St. Petersburg, Florida. They announced it in front of the city council

Q. What is your favorite memory on the team so far?

A. When I did well in regionals in fall and picked up a ranking. Because I didn’t expect anything

Q. What is your favorite movie?

A. A Walk to Remember

Q. If you could have a theme song, what would it be?

A. The Champ by Nelly

Q. If you could travel anywhere, where would it be?
