TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona Department of Intercollegiate Athletics celebrated its student-athletes at the annual C.A.T.S. Awards banquet Monday night at Westin La Paloma. Erin Menefee (cross country/track and field) was named 2014 valedictorian and the gymnastics team earned the Community Service Award. Individually, Menefee and Kieran Thompson of men’s tennis earned Community Service Awards while Lexe Selman of soccer earned the Inspiration Award.
Additionally, 147 student-athletes were recognized as Golden Eagle Distributors Academic Champions. To earn this distinction, a student-athlete must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher for the previous academic school year. Of those recognized, 16 had GPAs of 4.0. Soccer and men’s golf earned team Academic Achievement awards.
NCAA Champion and Pac-12 Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year Margo Geer earned the Ruby Award, given to the top female of the senior class. Also nominated were Alyssa Hasslen (women’s track and field), Julie Labonte (women’s track and field) and Candace Nicholson (volleyball).
NCAA Champion and collegiate record holder Lawi Lalang earned the Sapphire Award, given to the top male of the senior class. Also nominated were Jake Fischer (football), Nick Ross (men’s track and field) and Giles Smith (men’s swimming).
Madi Kingdon of volleyball was named Female Junior of the Year. Ka’Deem Carey (football), Kevin Cordes (men’s swimming) and Nick Johnson (men’s basketball) shared the Male Junior of the Year honor.
Bonnie Brandon of women’s swimming was named Female Sophomore of the Year. Kaleb Tarczewski of men’s basketball was named Male Sophomore of the Year.
