TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men’s golf team finished the second day of the 2014 Pac-12 Championships, hosted at The Gallery Golf Club’s North Course (par 72, 7,349) in Marana, Ariz on Saturday. The Wildcats will begin the fourth and final round Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. MST.
“Looking at just the scores, it’s a disappointing day,” head coach Jim Anderson said. “What doesn’t show up is how difficult the course was playing. Given the conditions that we faced, the golf course is the same for everyone. We let it beat us in a few spots but with that said, I’m really proud of the way that the guys hung in there.”
With gusting winds ranging from 35 to 45 mph, the conditions were difficult for the field. Stanford continued to lead the group with a round three score of 367 for a combined total of 1083. Stanford is currently 21 strokes ahead of California, who sits in second place. In the individual race, Patrick Rodgers of Stanford leads with a combined total of 209 (-7).
Arizona compiled a team total of 389 for the round for a combined total of 1129. The Wildcats finished in eighth place.
“Brenden (Redfern), Alex (McMahon) and Kolton (Lapa) all finished three-under on their last three holes,” Anderson said. “The fact that no one gave up, and that’s what we told them that we wanted, makes me happy. The effort we had today was all I could have asked for.”
For the round, McMahon led the Wildcats shooting just three-over for a score of 75. McMahon also leads the team overall with a total of 218 for a tie for sixth place. Both Erik Oja and Redfern shot five-over with scores of 77. Benson Liu and Lapa both shot rounds of 80 (+8). Christian Colegrove rounded out the lineup with a score of 84 (+12).
The second round was finished Saturday morning after a 7 a.m. tee time. The Wildcats shot 374. McMahon, who shot a 72 (E), led the team and finished the round in seventh place. Oja was close behind with a score of 74 (+2) for a 10th place tie. Redfern also shot a 74 (+2). Lapa shot a 76 (+4). Liu and Colegrove rounded out Arizona round scores with 78 (+6) and 81 (+9).
The final round of the 2014 Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championship will begin at 7:30 a.m. MST. Admission is free. An awards ceremony will be held following the conclusion of the round to crown both the team and individual conference champions.
“We have a chance to come up,” Anderson said. “We played with two top-40 teams today, and they only beat us by four or five. We can beat every team on this field. We were close to having the low first round. Going into tomorrow we aren’t concerned about the other teams. We just need to execute to the best of our ability.”
