Pullman, Wash. – The Pac-12 Conference announced on Saturday morning that senior Lawi Lalang, a member of the University of Arizona Wildcat track and field program, was named the 2014 Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Lalang will graduate from Arizona with a degree in physiology and a cumulative GPA of 3.425. He earned Pac-12 All-Academic second-team honors during the 2012 cross country season. He also earned 2013 MPSF All-Academic honors as well as the 2013 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches’ Association (USTFCCCA) Men’s Track Scholar Athlete of the Year for the indoor and outdoor seasons. The USTFCCCA also acknowledged Lalang as an Academic All-American for the 2013 outdoor season. Lalang has also volunteered 11 hours of his time to the Tucson community, reaching nearly 700 people.
On the year, Lalang has the No. 14 time in the country for the 1,500-meter race at 3:41.88. He will look to win his third-straight Pac-12 Championship in the 1,500-meter race this weekend. The senior is also entered in the 5,000-meter race as well, he is the defending NCAA Champion in the event.
Lalang is one of the most successful distance runners in collegiate history. He has won seven national championships during his career as a Wildcat, one cross country title, four indoor titles and two outdoor titles. He won two Pac-12 Cross Country Championships and was named the Pac-12 Male Athlete of the Year on two occasions. Lalang has earned first-team NCAA Indoor All-America honors six times. He holds the indoor collegiate record in the mile and the 5,000 meters.
Outdoors, Lalang claimed four Pac-12 Championships (1,500 three times, 10,000) and earned NCAA All-America honors six times. In 2013, Lalang was a finalist (one of three athletes) for The Bowerman, the award given to collegiate track and field's most outstanding athlete. Lalang holds five school records: the indoor mile, 3K and 5K and the outdoor 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters. Lalang’s indoor records in the mile and 5K are also the collegiate records.
In the summer of 2013, Lalang set an all-time, all-dates collegiate best of 13:00.95 in the 5K in Monaco on July 19. That time is the fastest a collegiate male has ever run a 5K, however, it is not the collegiate record because it did not take place during the collegiate season.
