Smyth Falls in Three-Setter at NCAAs

Arizona senior Lacey Smyth fell to Kansas State’s Petra Niedermayerova in a three-set thriller in the first round of the NCAA Singles Championships on Wednesday.

Smyth was invited to compete in the exclusive tournament for the third-straight year.

With the loss, Smyth completes her Wildcat career as one of the best in Arizona history.

The senior finished with a 63-34 singles record, playing at the No. 1 spot all four years and against the country’s top talent.

Her senior year was capped with an ITA regional Senior of the Year award for her accomplishments.

Niedermayerova defeated Smyth, 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 to advance to the round of 32 in Athens, Ga.

Singles and doubles competition will continue through Monday, May 26.
