TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona baseball team opened its official fall practice schedule Monday at Hi Corbett Field. The Wildcats will practice daily through November 15.
Assistant coaches Shaun Cole and Matt Siegel led Monday’s initial practice in place of head coach Andy Lopez, who had a triple bypass heart surgery earlier in the day. The surgery “went well” according to Vice President for Athletics Greg Byrne, and Lopez was recovering in intensive care following the operation.
On the field, the Wildcats picked up where they usually do with a workout focused on fundamentals, including fielding, base running, bullpen sessions and situational hitting. Coming days will feature more of the same and the club will host a series of intrasquad scrimmages each week for the next six weeks.
Arizona has 20 returnees on the fall roster, which welcomes in a talented freshman class. The roster will be pared down slightly following fall practices before being finalized for the spring season.
Juniors Joseph Maggi and Mathew Troupe are among the key veterans on the club. The two previewed the fall season last week in the video below.
