TUCSON, Ariz. Kaleb Tarczewski scored 18 points and Aaron Gordon put up a double-double on Saturday to lead the Red team past the Blue, 44-38, in the Arizona men’s basketball program’s annual Red-Blue Game.

Down 18-16 at the half, Red stormed to a 28-20 advantage in the second half, icing the game with a minute to play when Nick Johnson came up with a steal and was fouled while throwing down a one-handed transition dunk.

Gordon went for 12 points, 13 rebounds and a team-high three assists, while Tarczewski made 6-of-7 shots from the field and 6-of-9 from the stripe en route to sharing game-high honors with 18 points. Johnson added nine to bolster the Red team’s scoring.

Freshman Rondae Hollis-Jefferson shouldered the scoring load for the Blue squad with 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, sharing game-high honors with Tarczewski. The Chester, Pa., native also added four rebounds and two steals in his first action in an Arizona uniform.

The Blue team also got a boost from Brandon Ashley, who finished with a double-double of his own with 14 points and a dozen boards. Ashley was 6-of-9 from the floor and helped spark Blue to a 23-21 edge on the boards.

In addition to his double-double performance, Gordon starred before the scrimmage as the winner of the team’s annual slam dunk contest. His behind-the-back, under-the-rim throwdown on his second attempt drew multiple 10s from the judges’ panel of Damon Stoudamire, Joseph Blair, Dr. Ann Weaver Hart, Corey Williams and former head coach Lute Olson.

The Red-Blue festivities, which took place in front of a sold-out McKale Center and more than 7,000 viewers via live web stream, also featured introductions and remarks from members of the Wildcats’ 1994 Final Four team, as well as video features and pyrotechnic-aided 2013-14 team introductions.
