TUCSON, Ariz.- University of Arizona women’s soccer team concluded their 2013 spring home slate with a tie (1-1) against NMSU and a win (2-1) over UTEP.
On Saturday, the Wildcats tied New Mexico State University 1-1 in a fast paced match. The Wildcats got the lead in the first half when Senior Jazmin Ponce scored the goal off a corner kick. NMSU responded with a goal in the second half to tie the game 1-1.
On Sunday, Arizona came out with a 2-1 victory over the University of Texas at El Paso. UTEP managed to put one away 15 minutes into the match after a slow start by the Cats. Only 10 minutes later, Arizona responded when Ponce was fouled in the box which resulted in a penalty for the Wildcats. Ponce netted the penalty kick with confidence to tie up the game. Junior Candice Osei-Agyemang gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead off a great combination play around the box which lead teammate Ana Montoya to fire a shot that rebounded off the upright which allowed Candice to slot it into the back of the net.
“Our major objective over the weekend was team development and growth,” head coach Tony Amato said. “I thought we accomplished this objective over the course of two matches. We showed great resiliency to overcome a goal deficit in the second game against a team that is difficult to play against. I was happy with the weekend and I give a lot of credit to the players for competing on back to back days.”
To conclude the spring matches, the Cats will travel to El Paso, Texas to take on UNM on Sunday, April 21 at noon. Updates can be found on Twitter and Facebook.
