The University of Arizona men’s golf team shot 763 (+43) on Saturday to finish the stroke-play portion of the Carmel Cup in fourth place.
The Wildcats will square off with third-place Texas Tech in match-play competition on Sunday at Pebble Beach.
“Today was a tough day for our team,” Arizona head coach Jim Anderson said. “While it was great to enjoy the challenge of championship golf, there are some things we’ll need to improve in order to realize our goals for this season. What are usually minor mistakes are magnified on elite courses like Pebble Beach and Spyglass Hill.”
Senior Erik Oja provided the highlights for UA on Saturday, tying for third place at the end of the day with a total of 145 (+1). Oja shot 74 (+2) in the morning round at Pebble Beach before shooting a one-under 71 in the afternoon at the renowned Spyglass Hill.
A trio of Wildcats shared 17th place after Saturday’s action, as senior Benson Liu and juniors Dylan Kornberg and Alex McMahon each shot 154 (+10) on the day. Senior Christian Colegrove finished 23rd with a total of 160 (+16) and junior Tucker Wadkins took 24th with a score of 168 (+24).
“This is a great field, and it will be a good experience for our team to compete against quality competition,” Anderson said. “We’ll regroup tonight and look forward to the chance to take on Texas Tech in match play tomorrow.”Live scoring for the Carmel Cup is not available, but results will be posted at arizonawildcats.com at the end of Sunday’s match.
