Alex McMahon rode a three-under 69 on Tuesday to a tie for third at the Golfweek Conference Challenge as the Arizona men’s golf team took 10th with a total of 892 (+28).

The Wildcats shot 297 (+9) as a group in Tuesday’s final round. Oklahoma won the 15-team tournament with a total of 857 (-7).

“We’re disappointed with the result this week,” Arizona head coach Jim Anderson said. “Any time you have two guys in the mix to win the tournament, your team should have a chance to do the same. It’s early and we have time to try some different things, but we’ll have to work hard to get ready for our next opportunity to compete next week.”

McMahon shot his low round as a collegian on Tuesday to cement the first top-10 finish of his tenure at Arizona. He rolled in six birdies on the day on the way to a 69 (-3) that brought his tournament total to 211 (-5), a mark that also represented his best-career 54-hole score. The Oro Valley, Ariz., native finished one stroke off the pace for the individual medal.

“Alex did a great job all week of staying patient, but was at his best today,” Anderson said. “This should confirm in his mind that he can play with anyone. He stuck to the game plan and made clutch birdies, and I couldn’t be happier to see him play that way.”

Senior Erik Oja narrowly missed out on his second top-10 in as many starts this season with a final-round 73 (+1) that moved him into a tie for 13th place. He finished the three-day event with a total of 216 (E).

Freshman Bertrand Mommaerts finished 65th with a total of 233 (+17), junior Brenden Redfern placed 71st with a total of 239 (+23) and senior Christian Colegrove finished 74th with a score of 243 (+27).

UA will be idle until Sept. 27, when it takes the course for the opening day of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque. For more information on Arizona men’s golf, follow @UAWildcatsGolf on Twitter.
