TUCSON, Ariz. – After leading the Arizona volleyball team to the Wildcat Classic title over the weekend, junior Madi Kingdon and freshman Penina Snuka were rewarded with Pac-12 Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Monday. Kingdon was named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week, while Snuka was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.
Kingdon was named Wildcat Classic Tournament MVP after pacing the Wildcats both offensively and defensively. She was key to Arizona’s thrilling five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara after recording match-highs of 22 kills and 21 digs, while also adding six blocks.
She opened the tournament with a .533 hitting percentage (8 kills, 15 attempts), then had 13 kills with six digs and a .262 hitting percentage against Wofford. Kingdon averaged 4.30 kills, 2.90 digs and 5.20 points per set over the three matches, also recording a .318 hitting percentage. On the season, she is tied for the most kills in the Pac-12 (182) and is second in kills per set average (4.44) and points per set (5.30). With six double-doubles on the year, Kingdon leads the Pac-12 in the category.
Kingdon is the first Wildcat to be named player of the week since Tiffany Owens took home the weekly honor on Nov. 22, 2010.
Meanwhile, Snuka has been productive all season long at her setter position. She is the only Wildcat to play in all 43 sets so far this year. Snuka ranks second behind Kingdon with four double-doubles on the year. She filled up the stat sheet once again in the comeback victory over UCSB on Saturday as she finished with 46 assists, 13 digs, four kills and two blocks.
She had 100 assists and averaged 9.09 assists per set last week, helping the Wildcats to three victories and the Wildcat Classic Tournament title. She dished out 27 assists in the three-set victories over Loyola (Md.) and Wofford.
Snuka is the first Arizona freshman to earn the weekly honor since Kingdon was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week on Oct. 10, 2011. Snuka is just the third Arizona freshman to take home the award.
