TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona women’s soccer is set to host No. 11 UCLA on Sun. Sept. 29 for their first Pac-12 match at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. The match is set for a 2 p.m. kick off and will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
Last Time Out: In the previous weekend, Arizona (5-1-3) played host to Hawaii and defeated the Rainbow Warriors, 4-1. In the win, Hayley Estopare and Jazmin Ponce scored goals in the first five minutes of the match to give the Wildcats an early 2-0 lead. Ponce scored her second goal of the night and her sixth of the season off a free kick from outside the penalty box. The only goal in the second half came from sophomore Hannah Wong to give the Cats a 4-1 victory. Goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded a total of six saves of the 12 shots she faced.
About the Bruins: Last weekend, No. 11 UCLA (8-1) traveled to Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount and picked up two victories. Against Pepperdine, UCLA shutout the Waves 2-0 with freshman Darian Jenkins scoring her sixth goal of the season and Pepperdine handed UCLA their second goal off an own goal. In a 3-0 win over Loyola Marymount, the Bruins scored three goals in the first half recording their sixth shutout of the year. UCLA ranks third in the Pac-12 after dropping just one game against North Carolina earlier in the season.
Wildcats Ranked in the Pac: Among the Pac-12, Arizona is ranked No. 1 in goals (23) and No. 4 in shots (160). Ponce is in third place in shots with 38. Kaufman is in third place in the saves category with 35 overall. The Wildcats are in sixth place in the Pac-12 and is one of four teams to have only lost one match.
New to the Roster: Of the 13 freshmen and one transfer on the 2013 roster, eight newcomers have playing time under their belts. Freshmen Justene Kesterson and Haley Silverberg have both scored goals for the Wildcats. Freshman Lexe Selman has recorded a total of 16 shots, seven on goal. Jaden DeGracie has a total of eight shots and five assists.
Stats Among the Cats: Senior Jazmin Ponce leads the Wildcats in shots (38) and goals (six), including three game-winning goals. Ranking No. 2 on the squad is junior transfer Alexandra Doller who has recorded 21 shots and four goals with one game-winning score. Sophomore Kaitlyn Lopez has recorded a total of 13 shots and three goals to be ranked No. 3 in the goal category behind Ponce and Doller. Freshman DeGracie leads the Arizona roster in assists with five followed by Ponce with three.
Non-Conference Conclusion: With a victory over Hawaii last weekend, the Wildcats wrapped up their non-conference slate with an overall record of 5-1-3. Arizona’s solo loss was to No. 24 Texas Tech in a 2-0 battle in the Arizona Cats Classic. The three ties were double overtime draws against No. 24 Ohio State, Kansas and Illinois. The five victories were against Florida International, Florida Atlantic, UC Riverside, Southern Utah and Hawaii.
Up Next: The Wildcats will travel to California to take on No. 6 Stanford on Fri. Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. and California on Sun. Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. The match vs. Stanford will be on the Pac-12 Networks.
