Wildcats Visit Mesa for Thunderbird XC Classic

TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat men’s and No. 3 women’s cross country teams will make the short trip to Mesa, Ariz. this weekend for the Thunderbird Cross Country Classic. Mesa Community College is hosting the meet and the races will take place through the campus on Saturday, Oct. 12. The men will run 8,000 meters and the women will run 5,000 meters. The men’s race is set to start at 7 a.m. while the women’s race will begin at 7:45 a.m.

Arizona will compete against Aftershock Distance Club, Arizona Christian University, Arizona State University (M: , W: ), Dine College, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Estrella Mountain Community College, Mesa Community College, Navajo Technical University, Pima Community College.

In the week four USTFCCCA national poll, the Arizona women stayed at No. 3 in the country. Four other Pac-12 schools are ranked in the national poll, Washington is up three spots to No. 4, Oregon is down a spot to No. 6, Stanford slid three positions to No. 11 and Colorado climbed two spots to No. 12. In the west regional poll, the UA women are ranked No. 1 for the second-straight week.

The Wildcat men are No. 12 in the west regional poll. In the national poll, the Pac-12 has five teams among the top 30. Colorado is second, Oregon is fourth, UCLA fell nine spots to 21st, Stanford is 29th after falling six positions and Arizona State slid two spots to 30th.

On the women’s side, freshman McKenna Gaffney, junior Clea Formaz, junior Daylee Burr, sophomore Molly Callahan and senior Erin Menefee will toe the line for Arizona.

For the men, freshman Michael Cox, freshman Jeff Gautreau, freshman Travis Thorne, junior Braden Timpe, junior Thomas Valente and sophomore Samuel Willis will don the red and navy for the Wildcats.

The UA women won at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 28, claiming a first-place finish as a team in their third-straight race this season. In her season debut, Elvin Kibet led the way for the Wildcats with a second-place finish. The women had four finishers cross the line in eighth place or better and won with 48 points. The men’s team was led by Collins Kibet who took 24th place individually while the team finished in 10th place overall.
