TUCSON, Ariz. – Seniors Kieren Thompson and Fredrik Ask advanced in the doubles draw on Saturday at the ITA Southwest Regionals, hosted by Pepperdine University.
Thompson and Ask beat UC Santa Barbara’s Miles Seeman and Corey Karen 8-5 to move ahead. On Sunday they will face Pepperdine’s Francis Alcantara and Alex Sarkissian, who are currently ranked No. 48 in the nation.
“Today I was very happy with the energy and attitude of the team,” head coach Tad Berkowitz said. “Even in the two losses we took, the guys showed a lot of competitiveness and grit. Tomorrow I am looking to see the same energy.”
In addition to the doubles victory, Ask won his singles match of the day, defeating Daniel Simko of Loyola Marymount convincingly, 6-1, 6-1.
Fellow Wildcat Naoki Takeda also came up victorious with his win against Ryan Cheung of UC Irvine 6-4, 6-4.
Thompson fell in his singles match Saturday, as Pac-12 foe Mackie McDonald of UCLA won 6-2, 6-4.
Arizona’s only other loss came in doubles, as the No. 40 team of Roberto Quiroz and Ray Sarmiento from Southern California beat out Takeda and junior Sumeet Shinde 8-2.
