STANFORD, Calif. – In the first Pac-12 Conference meet of the season, the No. 19 Arizona gymnastics team narrowly fell to No. 12 Stanford, 195.925-195.850, on Sunday. The Wildcats picked up a win over Sacramento State (192.450) in the triangular meet.

“Even though we scored 195.850, which is a score that we can use, we didn’t do everything we expected of ourselves,” head coach Bill Ryden said. “I’m proud of the girls for how hard they fought. We came into a hostile environment and we did a great job, it just wasn’t great enough. We had three strong events. Bars and vault were outstanding.”

With a second place finish, the Wildcats had strong performances including two new career-high scores by sophomore Shelby Edwards and junior Kristin Klarenbach, who each earned 9.900s on vault.

“They had fantastic vaults,” Ryden said. “They’re both elite gymnasts and their abilities show. A score of 9.900 doesn’t surprise me. It doesn’t surprise me at all. I’m proud of them because they both gave incredible efforts, and it’s nice when the judges thank you for it.”

Other outstanding performances came from Jordan Williams, who scored a 39.225 as the lone all-around competitor for the Wildcats.

“Jordan had another great all-around meet,” Ryden said. “Again, she is continuing to lead her team and provide us with scores when we need them.”

The Cats first event of the day was floor. They earned a team total of 48.875.

“They did amazing floor,” Ryden said.

The Cats were led by Klarenbach with a score of 9.900, her second of the season. Klarenbach tied with Stanford’s Rachel Daum for second place. Williams posted a score of 9.825 while Shana Sangston and Jessie Sisler both provided scores of 9.775. Amber Wobma rounded out the scores with a 9.600.

In the second rotation of the night, the Cats scored 49.150 on vault.

Klarenbach and Edwards both led the Cats with their career-highs of 9.900. The two tied Stanford’s Danielle McNair for first place on the event. Adding to the vault score, Williams continued to be a main contributor with a score of 9.850. In her vault debut Selynna Felix-Terrazas received a 9.750 as did fellow freshman Mackenzie Valentin.

“We had a slow start on vault,” Ryden said. “But we continuously built off of each score. It ended up being an outstanding vault effort by each of them. I’m very proud of our effort tonight.”

The Cats then headed to bars where they posted a score of 49.150. Four scores of 9.850 were earned. Edwards, Williams, Gabby Laub and Krysten Howard spearheaded the group. Lexi Mills also contributed to the overall score with a 9.750.

“We had a good performance on bars,” Ryden said. “We let one score get away on bars, but overall the girls did pretty well. Obviously, any time you can go 49.150 on any event, you’re doing something right.”

Despite a difficult performance on beam last week, the Cats were able to score a 48.675 to end the afternoon.

Leading the Wildcats was Edwards who earned a 9.825. Edwards took the second place in the event. Sisler was also a main contributor with 9.800. Following close behind were Mills, Williams and Wobma with scores 9.725, 9.700 and 9.625, respectively.

“We had a .500 lead after three events, so you would hope at some point and you could take that and use it,” Ryden said. “Hopefully we learn from it. It was a bit of a step forward but it wasn’t a total step forward. We had a great effort this week and it never comes down to any one event when it comes to winning or losing a close meet.”

From here, Arizona will host their first home meet of the season against No. 1 Oklahoma on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m. MST. For continued coverage of Arizona Gymnastics, follow the team at facebook.com/ArizonaGymnastics and on Twitter @AZGymnastics.
