Women’s Swim/Dive Sweeps OSU, NAU and NMSU

TUCSON, Ariz. The Arizona women’s swimming and diving team returned to competition with a dominating performance to start the new year. The Wildcats earned a first place finish in nearly every event in sweeping past Oregon State, Northern Arizona and New Mexico State on Friday at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

The Wildcats, who are ranked No. 13 in the current College Swimming Coaches Association of America Poll (CSCAA), improved their record to 7-1 in dual meets this season. Arizona defeated Oregon State (195-91), Northern Arizona (188-107) and New Mexico State (202-92).

The big winner of the afternoon was sophomore Bonnie Brandon. Brandon earned a meet-best three individual first-place finishes. She won the 1000 free (9:59.67), 200 free (1:49.61) and 200 back (2:01.34).

Emma Schoettmer also turned in a strong performance by taking three top finishes. She took first place in the 100 breast, 200 breast (2:14.86) and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Pepper and Grace Finnegan each earned a pair of first-place finishes. Pepper took top honors in the 200 fly (1:59.75) and the 100 fly (55.66), while Finnegan won the 50 free (23.50) and 100 free (51.36). Finnegan was also part of the winning 200 medley relay team along with Schoettmer, Alana Pazevic and Katja Hajdinak.

Taylor Schick picked up a victory in the 100 back with a time of 56.45, just edging Pazevic (56.92).

On the diving side, freshman Sally Hackett won first in the 3m competition with a total score of 260.30 with fellow freshman Michal Bower placing just behind in third with a score of 250.00.

Arizona returns to competition on Friday, Jan. 24 as it hits the road to take on Stanford at 3 p.m. The Wildcats will face California the following day at 1 p.m.
