OJAI, Calif. - Arizona sophomore Laresa Marino advanced to the quarterfinals of the invitational singles draw at the Pac-10 Championships, Thursday, at the Ojai Valley Tennis Club. Marino topped Oregon's Valerie Young, 7-6, 6-0, in the opening round and USC's Anita Loyola, 6-4, 6-2, in the second.
In other main draw action, Arizona freshman Uzma Khan won her opening round main draw singles match as she oulasted Oregon's 78th-ranked Alina Wygonowska, 6-0, 7-6. With the win, Khan notched her 20th win of the year. 83rd-ranked Khan then came up short in the round of 16 to 23rd-ranked Allison Bradshaw of Arizona State, 1-6, 6-2, 7-5. Wildcat junior Michelle Gough, sophomore Lindsay Blau, and senior Vanessa Abel all dropped their opening round contests. Gough was eliminated from the tournament by 15th-ranked Jewel Peterson, 6-1, 6-3. The 53rd-ranked Blau fell to Peterson's teammate Jacqui Boyd, 6-2, 6-2.
In other singles invitational draw action, UA junior Joanna Buczkowska advanced to the second on Thursday with a victory over UCLA's Jennifer Donahue, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore Brooke Taylor and freshman Siri Fomsgaard were unable to make it past the first round.
The Wildcats resume play at the Pac-10 Championships Friday morning with singles action slated to begin at 8:00 a.m. PDT followed by the opening round of doubles tournament at 2:00 p.m. PDT.
