OKLAHOMA CITY--Nine current or former University of Arizona softball players have been selected among 51 chosen to participate in the USA Softball Women's National Team Camp May 30 to June 3 in Chula Vista, Calif.

USA Softball will select two 16-player teams that first will participate in a four-city West Coast tour for a USA Softball Shootout in Portland, Ore. (June 8), Spokane, Wash. (June 10), Sacramento, Calif. (June 14) and Los Angeles (June 17).

The teams will then represent the United States in international competitions such as the U.S. Cup in Honolulu, the Canada Cup in Vancouver and the Pan Am Qualifier in Venezuela during this summer.

UA's current players named to the camp include pitchers Becky Lemke and Jennie Finch, catcher Lindsey Collins, third baseman Toni Mascarenas and outfielders Lauren Bauer and Nicole Giordano. Additionally, infielder Lovieanne Jung, who is redshirting the 2001 season, also was selected.

Former Wildcat players selected to the camp include former All-Americans in pitcher Nancy Evans, a current UA assistant coach, and first baseman Amy Chellevold, now in private business in Tucson.

The UA had more players selected than any other softball program in the country. UCLA was next with eight.

The 32 USA National Team Camp players picked for the summer schedule in 2001 could ultimately be among candidates for a spot on the next U.S. Olympic Team .
