Arizona Men's and Women's Swimming Complete First Day of Texas Invite

AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 3 Arizona women's swim team and the No. 5 men's swim team competed in the first day of the Texas Invitational today, Friday, Dec. 1.

On the women's side junior Sarah Tolar recorded an NCAA automatic qualifying time in the 500 free with a time of 4:44.90. Sophomore Beth Botsford qualified in the 100 fly posting a time of 54.04. Arizona women's 400 medley relay team finished with a time of 3:36.69, also an NCAA automatic qualifying time. The relay team was made up of Botsford, freshman Jessica Wagner, junior Erin Vogt and Tolar.

Making NCAA consideration times were junior Katie Zimbone, in the 500 free (4:50.62), junior Maria Papadopoulou in the 100 fly with the time of 55.92. Vogt (54.66) and junior Amy Bouta (54.73) also made consideration times in the 100 fly. Vogt also swam the 200 IM in a time of 2:03.11. Junior Jenny Vanker participated in the 50 free and swam in the time of 23.25.

The women's 200 free relay team, made up of freshman Kristen Brennan, sophomore Annie Joseph, Vogt and senior Lindsay Farella swam in a time of 1:34.57. The 400 medley relay team (sophomore Julie Manit, junior Jessamyn Miller, Bouta and Farella) finished with the time of 3:47.61. Competing in the 50 free were Bouta (23.65), Farella (23.77), Brennan (23.82), Joseph (23.97) and freshman Kim Robertson (24.14).

The Wildcat's men's swim team had two athletes qualify for the NCAA Championships, taking place in late March. Junior Roland Schoeman qualified in two events, the 100 fly (47.16) and the 50 free (19.48). Senior Tyler Painter qualified in the 500 free with the time of 4:19.74.

The men's 200 free relay team, consisting of freshman Eric laFleur, Schoeman, freshman Tyler Johnson, and senior Jay Schryver, made an NCAA consideration time of 1:19.87. Sophomore Jeff Dash made consideration times in the 100 fly (47.97) and the 200 IM (1:49.85). Junior Peter Johnson, senior Scott Gaskins, T. Johnson and laFleur all made consideration times in the 50 free. The 400 medley relay team (junior Kris Souther, freshman Greg Owen, senior Ben Anderson and Schryver) swam in a consideration time of 3:17.52.

The 200 medley relay team made up of Souther, Gaskins, P. Johnson and freshman Zach Feguson swam in a time of 1:23.97. laFleur competed in the 100 fly and swam in a time of 49.11. Freshman Matt Sawatzki swam the 500 free in a time of 4:35.81, while Anderson swam the 200 IM in a time of 1:51.48. Gaskins swam the 50 free in a time of 20.89. Schryver also swam the 50 free in a time of 20.55. The 400 medley relay team of sophomores Tom Martensen, Dave Anderson, Dash and senior Gaskins, swam with in the time of 3:19.55.

Tomorrow is the second day of competition at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. Preliminaries begin at 10:00 a.m. and finals begin at 6:00 p.m. The final day of competition is Sunday, Dec. 2.
