Lisa Rutledge of Vista, Stephanie Saragosa of Chula Vista and Shannon Torregrosa from San Diego will join a young team that will consist of nine freshmen and sophomores and just one senior. The Cats had three available scholarships from last season's 22-7 team that graduated All-Pac-10 middle blocker Keisha Johnson Demps and defensive specialist Jodi Bethke.
"We've brought in another class of exceptional athletes on the heels of what we felt was our best class ever last," head coach David Rubio said.
Rutledge played with Arizona setter Dana Burkholder on the 1998 U.S. Junior National Team that won the world championship. She was also named San Diego's CIF Player of the Year. Saragosa and Torregrosa were teammates of Wildcat outside hitter Jill Talbot in 1997 with the San Diego Juniors Volleyball Club. Francis Parker, Saragosa's high school team, won the 1998 state championship in its division.
"Lisa is one of the top two high school left-side hitters in the country," Rubio said. "She enters our program with more experience than any other left-side hitter we've signed since 1992. She has tremendous physical potential and could be an All-American. She'll challenge for a starting position right away.
"Stephanie is a fast, explosive middle blocker. From an attacking standpoint, she's going to be able to be effective immediately. She has the potential to play all around. Stephanie plays with a high degree of emotion. She should see significant playing time in the middle right away due to the loss of Keisha.
"Shannon may be the most physical high school player in the nation. She has a great arm swing and is a great jumper. She hits as hard as any high school senior I've seen. She's been compared to (former Wildcat All-American and U.S. Olympic player) Caren Kemner."Here's the complete list of Arizona signees:
