TUCSON--Melissa Baker's two-out solo home run to left-center in the top of the sixth helped lift Illinois State (26-32)to a 3-1 victory over Middle Tennessee State and kept the Redbirds alive in NCAA Region 2 softball action at Hillenbrand Stadium.
MTSU finished its season with a 39-21 record and its first NCAA Tournament appearance.
Baker's homer broke a 1-1 tie. ISU added an insurance run on Cathy Pverly's RBI single after Jodie Kent hit a two-out double in the seventh.
Illinois State opened the scoring with a run in the top of the second when Jamie Bagnall led off with an infield popup that was lost in the sun and dropped in for a single, moved to third on a sacrifice and an infield grounder, and scored on Abbie Scott's single.
Courtney Wallace led off the MTSU third with a home run, her first of the season, to tie the game at 1-1.
ISU will play next at 5 p.m. Saturday against the loser of the Nebraska-South Carolina game, or Arizona if the top-seeded Wildcats lose to UMass.
