Tucson, Ariz. (Sept. 30) -- The University of Arizona women's soccer team shutout in-state rival Northern Arizona, 1-0, at home on Saturday to claim the title in its own Starwoods Plaza Soccer Classic.
The lone goal of the game was scored by Wildcat junior foward KRISTI LOROÑA (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS), who rebounded her own shot and then found the net at 36:57 in the first half. Even though NAU outshot the Cats, 10-3, in the second period, neither team scored for the remainder of the contest.
Despite Arizona's 9-5 first-half shots advantage, Northern Arizona finished with a 15-12 edge in shots for the game. Wildcat freshman LIZ BARTLETT (Dove Canyon, CA/Santa Margarita HS) registered a game-high seven shots, including four on-goal.
Arizona goalkeepers SHANNON MONTI (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain HS) and INGER AIRHEART (Roseville, CA/Oakmont HS) combined for four saves and registered the Cats' first shutout of the year.
Winning its first back-to-back contests since October 1999, Arizona improves to 3-6-1 overall. On a three-game losing skid, Northern Arizona slides to 3-10-0. Tournament action continues on Sunday, Oct. 1, with Northern Arizona playing Long Island at 1 p.m. at the UA's Murphey Stadium.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend, playing at Oregon State on Friday, Oct. 6, at 3 p.m. then at Oregon on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.
