Three Doubles Teams Advance to Second Round at Men's Tennis Tourney

MALIBU, Calif. - Three University of Arizona men's tennis doubles teams advanced Thursday to the second round of the ITA Region VIII-South Championships. Pepperdine is the host school of the five-day tournament.

The Wildcat duo of junior Steven Capriati and freshman Whi Kim defeated Jerome Chan and Mike Placek of UC Santa Barbara, 8-6, while freshman Carl Hagman and sophomore Tom Lloyd downed UCSB's Scott Schnogg and Alex Yaftali. Senior doubles partners Brian Jackson and Jari Niskala earned an 8-3 win over USC's Garrett Wong and Christian Jensen, 8-3.

In singles play, Capriati fell to No. 3 Al Garland of Pepperdine, 6-0, 7-5. He defeated Mike Placek of UCSB, 6-3, 4-6, (10-4), in consolation play.

The Wildcats continue second-round play Friday at 11 a.m.
