WHAT'S HAPPENING: The University of Arizona women's basketball team (18-10 overall, 8-8 Pac-10) is looking to end a three-game losing skid this weekend when it wraps up regular season play against the Bay Area schools. The Wildcats will face Stanford on Thursday, Mar. 8, at 7 p.m. in the first game of the weekend.
Arizona takes on California on Saturday, Mar. 10, at 2 p.m. in the final game of regular season play. The Cats will honor the team's only senior, Reshea Bristol, during a ceremony after the contest.
With only four wins in their last 12 games, the Wildcats desperately need to sweep this weekend's games in order to secure a fifth straight NCAA tournament berth. At 18-10 overall and 8-8 in Pac-10 play, Arizona has slipped into a tie for fifth place in the league standings with California. With the loss of Krista Warren to injury, Arizona is once again down to only nine active players.
The Wildcats are two wins away from their fifth 20-win season in the last six years. They are also only two wins away from giving head coach Joan Bonvicini her 17th career 20-win season.
With 15.9 points per game, junior forward Elizabeth Pickney remains the Wildcat scoring leader. She is second in rebounding, with 6.6 per game. Senior guard Reshea Bristol is second on the team in scoring, at 15.4 ppg, and is leading both Arizona and the Pac-10 in assists, averaging 7.54 per game.
Freshman forward Veranda James is third in scoring at 13.1ppg and has the team's top rebounding average at 8.2 per game. Junior center LaKeisha Taylor is fourth on the team in scoring, with 10.4 ppg, and is leading the Pac-10 in field goal percentage, hitting 62.1 percent from the floor.
As a team, Arizona is leading the Pac-10 in scoring (79.8 ppg), scoring margin (+10.0 ppg) and field goal percentage (.473). The Cats are second in four other categories, including rebounding (40.3 rpg) and free throw percentage (.703).
