Capriati and Aropovic Advance to Singles Finals at Men's Tennis Tourney

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Arizona juniors Steven Capriati and Bruno Aropovic advanced to their singles flight's championship matches Saturday at the San Diego All-College Men's Tennis Tournament.

Capriati did not drop a set in his quarterfinal and semifinal round matches in the Flight 1 bracket. He defeated San Diego's Steven Taylor, 6-2, 6-1, in the quarterfinals and Point Loma Nazarene's Rodrigo Suarez, 6-4, 6-4, in the semifinal round.

Aropovic earned a berth in the Flight 2 finals match with a quarterfinal round victory over San Diego State's Khalid Naffa, 6-3, 6-2, and a win over Santa Barbara's Alex Yaftali in the semifinals, 7-5, 6-3.

In other singles action, UA freshmen Carl Hagman and Whi Kim dropped their third round singles matches. Hagman fell to San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger, 6-2, 6-0, while Kim was defeated by San Diego's Juan Cerda, 6-4, 7-6.

On the doubles side, Capriati and Kim were victorious in their quarterfinal round match over Santa Barbara's Michael Faust and Mike Placek, 8-2, before falling in the semifinals to San Diego State's doubles team of Maiberger and Travis Hasson, 9-7.

Capriati and Aropovic's championship matches are slated to begin Sunday at 9:30 a.m. PDT.
