Arizona Trails First Place ASU By Three Strokes; Only Six Shots Separate Top-Five Teams

Tempe, Ariz. The University of Arizona men's golf team opened with rounds of 283 and 287 today at the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational and is in fourth place heading into tomorrow's final round. The Wildcats total of 6-under-par 570 is three shots behind first place Arizona State who carded a 9-under-par 567 today (281-286) at ASU's Karsten Golf Course (Par-72, 7,027 yards). The Sun Devils own a one shot lead over New Mexico, who is in second place at 568. Fresno State is in third at 569.

Individually, ASU's Paul Casey and Rickard Sundgren, a member of the Swedish National Team, are tied for first place at 6-under-par 138. Arizona's Derek Gillespie is tied for third with New Mexico's Michael Letzig with a 4-under-par 140. Gillespie had rounds of 69 and 71 today. Arizona freshman Ricky Barnes is among a group of six golfers who are tied for fifth at 3-under-par 141. He opened with rounds of 71 and 70 today.

The rest of the Arizona lineup includes Scott Moore, who is tied for 19th at even-par 144 (71-73); Cody Beyer, who is tied for 27th at 1-over-par 145 (72-73) and Reid Hatley, who is tied for 52nd at 5-over-par 149 (75-74).

Two Arizona golfers are competing as individuals and they are Patrick Norris (T37th, 147) and Brandon Smith (T65th, 151).

Play continues tomorrow at ASU's Karsten Golf Course and the final round gets underway at 7 a.m.
