TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona's power display in the second inning helped boost the No. 2- ranked Wildcats to a 9-0 softball victory over visiting Western Michigan Wednesday night. The Wildcats remained undefeated at 22-0.
UA freshman pitcher Jenny Gladding held the Broncos (0-2) to 1 hit and struck out 10 in improving to 7-0. After hitting Andrea Kellicut with a pitch to open the game, and giving up a bunt single to Alaina Scott, she retired the final 15 batters.
The Wildcats had a single by Kim Balkan, a home run by Gladding, a double by Erika Hanson, a triple by Lauren Bauer and a home run by Mackenzie Vandergeest to score five runs in the second and surge to a 6-1 lead.
An RBI double by Bauer and a two-run single by Toni Mascarenas pushed it to 9-0 in the third and made the game subject to the eight-run mercy rule shortened to five innings.
Starter Laura Stewart (0-1) took the loss in one and one-third innings. The Broncos will play five games in Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational tournament Friday through Sunday.
