The University of Arizona women's basketball team (19-11 overall, 9-9 Pac-10) is making its sixth consecutive postseason appearance by earning a berth in the 2001 Women's National Invitation Tournament. The Cats last played in the WNIT at the end of the 1996 season and won the championship that year.
The Wildcats will take on Pepperdine in the first round at home on Thursday, Mar. 15, at 7 p.m. in the McKale Center. If the Cats win, they will advance to play the winner of the New Mexico-Houston matchup on either Saturday, Mar. 17 or Sunday, Mar. 18. Location and time of that contest are TBA.
After winning only five of their final 14 regular season games, the Wildcats stand at 19-11 overall and 9-9 in Pac-10 play. They finished in fifth place in the Pac-10, their lowest finish and worst Pac-10 record in six years. The Cats ended their season with a 75-62 win over California at home on Mar. 10.
Arizona needs only one more victory to log its fifth 20-win season in the last six years. That would also give head coach Joan Bonvicini her 17th career 20-win season.
With 16.5 points per game, junior forward Elizabeth Pickney is leading Arizona in scoring and ranks third in the Pac-10. She is the team's second-leading rebounder, averaging 6.5 per game.
