Albuquerque, N.M. (Sept. 14) -- Snapping a season-opening four-game losing skid, the University of Arizona women's soccer team defeated New Mexico, 3-2, in overtime on Thursday night in Albuquerque.
New Mexico took the lead early with a goal at 15:41, then Arizona retaliated with its own goal, a tally by freshman forward MEAGHAN McNATT (Chino Hills, CA/Ruben S. Ayala HS) which was assisted by fellow freshman LISA MIRELES (Los Alamitos, CA/Los Alamitos HS).
Freshman forward LIZ BARTLETT (Dove Canyon, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic HS) scored her first collegiate goal at 62:36 to give the Cats a 2-1 advantage. Junior midfielder ERIN NELSON (Tucson, AZ/Sabino HS) was credited with the assist, the first of her career.
With less than seven minutes remaining in the contest, the Lobos knotted the score and forced the match into overtime. The contest was nearly 13 minutes into the overtime period when senior forward KERI KENNEDY-WEBER (Coto de Caza, CA/Santa Margarita HS) scored her second goal in as many games and nailed the victory for the Wildcats. Senior defender ANN GIALLONARDO (Huntington Beach, CA/Marina HS) earned the assist, her career's first, on the gamewinning goal.
Arizona edged New Mexico in the shots category, 13-12, with Liz Bartlett garnering a game-high five. Wildcat goalkeepers SHANNON MONTI (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain HS) and INGER AIRHEART (Roseville, CA/Oakmont HS) split time in goal, with Monti tallying three saves and each allowing only one goal.
The Wildcats improve their record to 1-4-0 on the year, and UNM, which has lost four of its last five matches, falls to 3-4-0 overall. In the midst of a four-game road swing, the Cats remain in Albuquerque for a neutral contest against Evansville on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. MDT.
