Men's Tennis Upsets New Mexico State In Home Opener

TUCSON, Ariz. - Sweeping the 46th-ranked New Mexico State Aggies in doubles play led the 60th-ranked Arizona men's tennis team to a 6-1 win Saturday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.

At the No. 1 spot in doubles, junior Steven Capriati and freshman Whi Kim defeated Cesar Obieta and Alvaro Dominguez, 8-5. At the second spot, the duo of sophomore Tom Lloyd and freshman Carl Hagman beat Jerry Noble and Dan Even, 8-3, while senior Brian Jackson and freshman Roeland Brateanu earned an 8-6, win at the 3rd position against Ben Newcombe and Aurelien Monmarson.

In singles action the Cats earned wins at the No. 2 through No. 6 spots. Kim flew by Monmarson, 6-2, 6-3, at the 4th position, and Lloyd defeated Dominguez, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 2 spot.

The Aggies earned their only point at the No. 1 spot, where Capriati fell to Obieta, 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Cats are now 1-0, overall and the Aggies are 0-1.

The Wildcats will take on Santa Clara University tomorrow, at noon, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
