Tucson, Ariz. (Sept. 29) -- Playing its school-record fifth overtime game of the season, the University of Arizona women's soccer team edged Long Island, 2-1, in overtime during the first game of the Starwoods Plaza Soccer Classic on Friday.
After both teams went scoreless through the first half, Long Island struck early in the second period when Erika Lee scored a header off a Laura Brosious corner kick at the 46:03 mark. At 52:40, Wildcat freshman midfielder LIZ BARTLETT (Dove Canyon, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic HS) took a through-ball from sophomore midfielder NAOMI CHU (Thousand Oaks, CA/Westlake HS), then dribbled past LIU goalkeeper Mary Jaeger to register the equalizer.
Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation, forcing the Cats' fifth overtime game of the year, a new school record. It was Bartlett who gave the Cats the victory just 3:21 into the overtime, with a dribble-through goal that was a virtual repeat of her first goal of the match.
Arizona outshot Long Island, 21-10, with Bartlett tallying a game-high five shots. Wildcat goalkeepers SHANNON MONTI (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain HS) and INGER AIRHEART (Roseville, CA/Oakmont HS) split time in the nets, with Airheart collecting three saves while allowing one goal. LIU keeper Mary Jaeger had nine saves in the game.
The Wildcats have ended a three-game winless skid and improve to 2-6-1 on the season. Long Island slips to 4-7-0 overall, seeing its modest two-game win streak come to an end. The Starwoods Plaza Soccer Classic continues on Saturday, Sept. 30, when Arizona takes on in-state rival Northern Arizona at 7 p.m. at Murphey Stadium.
