TUCSON, Ariz.- UCLA and Stanford. Before Saturday night that was the complete list of schools that had won at least a share of the Pac-10 volleyball title since conference play began in 1986. You may now add the University of Arizona to that list. The Wildcats broke into the exclusive title club with a 3-1 victory over arch-rival Arizona State in McKale Center Saturday night. The Wildcats' school-best 16-2 Pac-10 Conference record earned them a share, with Southern California, of their first title ever. USC, 3-0 winners over Washington on Saturday, also finished the season 16-2 in the conference, tying the Cats for the top spot. The two teams split the season series 1-1.

Picked to finish fourth in the preseason conference coaches poll, the Wildcats led wire-to-wire, never relinquishing the top spot. They swept seven conference series and split with UCLA and USC. Over the course of the two month title run, the Wildcats won 51 of the 63 conference games they played, outscoring their opponents 911-to-581 during that span.

In Saturday's match, the Wildcats dropped the first game 12-15 to the Devils before coming to life and taking the next three 15-10, 15-8, 15-7. Arizona out-hit ASU .262 to .198 for the match, rapping home 78 kills on 202 attempts while committing 25 errors.

Fittingly, on Arizona's Senior Night, it would be senior Allison Napier to lead the way to victory over the Sun Devils. Finishing the match with a career- and match-high 34 kills on 79 attempts, also a career-best, she committed only eight errors for an impressive .329 hitting percentage. She also chipped in with 10 digs and four total blocks. Sophomores Stefani Saragosa and Lisa Rutledge were the only two other Wildcats to finish the match with double digit kills, collecting 14 and 13, respectively. Saragosa, who hit .480, also tallied a match-high six total blocks while Rutledge picked up 15 digs. Junior Jill Talbot led both teams with 19 digs. Setter Dana Burkholder dished out 62 assists and had 18 digs.

With the Pac-10 season complete, the Wildcats will travel to Stockton, Calif., over the Thanksgiving Day break to compete in Pacifics Community Bankers Classic. UA will face fourth-ranked Colorado State on Friday, Nov. 24 at 6 p.m. MST and either San Jose State or No. 11 Pacific on Saturday, Nov. 25.

Notes: The Wildcats honored their three seniors, Elvina Clark, Marisa DaLee and Allison Napier, in a pre-game ceremony and were presented the Pac-10 Championship Trophy by Arizona Senior Associate Athletic Director Rocky LaRose and Pac-10 Assistant Commissioner Christine Hoyles after the match.
