CHASKA, Minn. (June 3) - Although the Arizona men's golf team did not make the cut at the 1999 NCAA Men's Golf Championships, two UA individuals did, and they will both play in Friday an Saturday's third and final rounds. UA senior Derek Gillespie is tied for second place with East Tennessee State's Chris Wisler and the two are two shots off the lead, heading into tomorrow's third round.

The 72-hole tournament, which is being held at the Hazeltine National Golf Club (Par-72, 7,196 yards), was played in windy conditions today, and for the majority, scores were high as a result.

After shooting an even-par 72 yesterday, Gillespie (Oshawa, Onario) responded with a 1-under-par 71 today to bring his two-day total to 1-under-par 143. Gillespie began the day in a tie for 13th, but was able to move up after being one of just six golfers to shoot under-par. He trials Northwestern's Luke Donald, who has a first place total of 3-under-par 141. Donald shot a 68 today, which was the day's best round to move into first place. As for Wisler, who was the leader after the first round, he shot a 75 today after opening with a 68.

"I've been striking the ball really well the past few weeks, and that has continued the past two days," said Gillespie, who is attempting to become Arizona's first-ever men's golf NCAA champion. "The wind didn't bother me much at all. It has been windy in Arizona lately, so I'm used to it. Because of that, I thought we were well-prepared coming into the tournament and that we had a good chance to make the cut. But unfortunately, things didn't work out."

Another Arizona golfer, junior Scott Moore (Collinsville, Ill.), was another one of the nine individuals to make the cut. He ended the first two rounds in a 10-way tie for 29th at 6-over-par 150 and was forced to go into a playoff to qualify for the next two rounds. He shot a 75 for the second consecutive day to earn an individual spot.

As for the Wildcats, their 36-hole total of 39-over-par 615 was not good enough to put them in the top-15, which was the cutline for the final two rounds. The team shot a 312 today after recording a 303 in yesterday's first day of play and wound up in a tie with South Carolina for 20th place. The UA ended up seven shots off the cut.

Clemson is in first place at 14-over-par 590 and owns a one-shot lead over second place Brigham Young (591). Defending national champion UNLV is in third (593) and Northwestern is in fourth at 595. Georgia and yesterday's first round leader Oklahoma State are tied for fifth at 597.

After Gillespie and Moore, the rest of the Wildcat lineup included Andy Barnes, who was tied for 111th with a 158 (77-81), Tim Weiss, who was tied for 149th at 165 (80-85) and Cody Beyer, who was also tied for 149th at 165 (79-86).
