Corvallis, Ore. (Oct. 6) -- The University of Arizona women's soccer team played Oregon State to a 1-1 overtime tie in Corvallis during the teams' Pac-10 opener on Friday. The contest is Arizona's sixth overtime match of the year.
The Wildcats struck first with a goal at the 25:25 mark, an unassisted breakaway by freshman LIZ BARTLETT (Dove Canyon, CA/Santa Margarita HS). Oregon State's Ann Marie Fallow answered for the Beavers just 37 seconds into the second half, off a cross by Christy Castalanelli.
Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation nor during both overtime periods. Oregon State outshot Arizona, 24-8, for the match. Bartlett led the UA with three shots, including two on-goal.
Arizona goalkeepers SHANNON MONTI (Phoenix, AZ/Shadow Mountain HS) and INGER AIRHEART (Roseville, CA/Oakmont HS) combined for 9 saves, with Airheart allowing the only OSU goal.
Five of the Cats' last seven matches have been overtime contests, and this tie marks the first time in seven years of Arizona soccer that the Cats did not open Pac-10 play with a loss. The Wildcats stand at 3-6-2 overall and 0-0-1 in Pac-10 play, while Oregon State moves to 6-6-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the Pac-10.
The Wildcats remain in the Pacific Northwest this weekend to take on Oregon on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.
