Arizona Loses by Just Two Shots; Derek Gillespie and Ricky Barnes Finish Second and Third

Tempe, Ariz. Finishing with the best round of the day, the University of Arizona men's golf team placed second at the ASU Thunderbird/Savane Invitational, which wrapped up this afternoon at the ASU's Karsten Golf Course (Par-72, 7,027 yards). The Wildcats' final round total of 10-under-par 278 moved them from fourth to second, where they finished with a 16-under-par 848, which was two shots behind first place Arizona State.

The Sun Devils fired a 279 today and won the title with a 18-under-par 846. Fresno State placed third at 850, New Mexico was fourth with a 854 and Oregon and the Swedish National Team rounded out the top-five at 862.

Individually, ASU's Paul Casey won the medalist honors with a 9-under-par 207 (69-69-69). He beat Arizona's Derek Gillespie by one shot, after Gillespie shot a 68 today to move up to second place. The UA senior had a three-round total of 8-under-par 208 (69-71-68) to help give him his best finish of the season. Teammate Ricky Barnes placed third with a 6-under-par 210 (71-70-69). Arizona's third top-10 performance was turned in by Scott Moore, who tied for eighth at 4-under-par 212 after shooting a 68 today.

The rest of the Arizona lineup included Cody Beyer, who tied for 28th at 2-over-par 218 (72-73-73) and Reid Hatley, who tied for 62nd at 8-over-par 224 (75-74-75).

Two Arizona golfers competed as individuals and they were Patrick Norris (T46th, 221) and Brandon Smith (T83rd, 231).

Arizona's next action will be on April 24-26, when it returns to the Karsten Golf Course for the Pac-10 Men's Golf Championships.
