Barnes Qualifies For The U.S. Open

TUCSON, Ariz. (June 9) - Andy Barnes, a senior on this past season's Wildcat men's golf team, qualified to play in the 1999 U.S. Open in a sectional qualifier that was held at the El Caballero Country Club in Tarzana, Calif., on June 7-8. He shot rounds of 70-71 (141) in the 36-hole qualifier and had to go into a playoff to defeat two other golfers to earn one of the site's five qualifying spots.

Barnes (Stockton, Calif.) was the lone senior on the 1998-99 Wildcat golf roster and was a honorable mention All-Pac-10 Conference performer. He was second on the team in scoring average (74.13) and had two-top-10 outings on the year.

A former UA golfer, David Berganio, was another one of the five U.S. Open qualifiers from El Caballero Country Club, after he shot rounds of 67-73 (140). Another past Arizona golfer, Jeb Stuart was the top qualifier at the Thorntree Country Club in Dallas with rounds of 70-65, and he will play in the U.S. Open as well.

The U.S. Open washeld June 17-20, at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C.
