TUCSON, Ariz. (Sept. 11) - No. 15 Arizona swept a pair of matches before falling to fifth-ranked Nebraska at the Cornhuskers' U.S. Bank Tournament in Lincoln, Neb., this weekend.
With starters Dana Burkholder and Lisa Rutledge back in the lineup for the first time this year, the Cats swept the Aztecs, 15-12, 15-9, 15-9, in their first match of the tournament Friday night. Freshman outside hitter Shannon Torregrosa posted a season-best 17 kills while hitting .429. Junior middle blocker Marisa DaLee recorded 11 kills and led the Cats with six blocks. Burkholder, who, along with Rutledge, missed the first week of the season representing the United States at the Junior World Championships in Canada, recorded 43 assists and seven kills. Arizona had 57 kills to SDSU's 33.
Saturday morning, the Cats put away South Florida, a 25-8 team a year ago, 15-12, 15-5, 15-9. Sophomore outside hitter Jill Talbot hit .400 (14-4-25) and posted a double-double with 11 digs. Burkholder tallied 40 assists and 12 digs. The Bulls managed just one more kill than error (19-18) over the final two games.
Nebraska earned its seventh consecutive win to wrap up the tournament. The Huskers, who swept all three of their U.S. Bank contests, defeated the Cats, 15-9, 16-14, 15-6. DaLee led all players with 12 kills, and Burkholder led all participants with 39 assists.
Burkholder and Talbot earned spots on the U.S. Bank All-Tournament team.
The Cats return to action Thursday when they open Pac-10 play at home against Oregon State at 7 p.m. MST Sept. 16 in the McKale Center.
