Gardner Named Basketball Times Freshman of Year, 3rd Team All-American

Tucson, Ariz. -- University of Arizona freshman point guard Jason Gardner was named National Freshman of the Year by Basketball Times today. He was also named to the publication's All-America third team and to the Freshman All-America first team.

The freshman from North Central H.S. in Indianapolis, Ind., leads the Wildcats with 152 assists (4.9 apg) this season. He is also fourth on the team in scoring (12.9 ppg) and second on the team in steals (50, 1.6 spg).

His backcourt mate, freshman Gilbert Arenas was named to the Freshman All-American second team. Arenas is third on the team with a 15.2 ppg average. He also leads the team in steals with 66 (2.1 spg), a UA freshman record.

Gardner was joined on the All-America Third Team by Vanderbilt's Dan Langhi, Duke's Chris Carrawell, Oklahoma State's Desmond Mason and Fresno State's Courtney Alexander. He was the only freshman named to the All-America first, second or third teams.

Gardner was named National Freshman of the Year by the USBWA last week and was also named to the All-Pacific-10 Conference first team.
