TUCSON, ARIZ.-- University of Arizona women's golfer Lorena Ochoa was named Golf World magazine Player of the Week Tuesday for the week of Sept. 29.

Ochoa is coming off a stellar performance at the Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M. The freshman captured her first collegiate championship in just her second appearance as a Wildcat.

"Lorena played great," said Arizona head coach Greg Allen. "She's one of the great college golfers. It was only a matter of time before she got her first win."

A native of Guadalajara, Mexico, Ochoa fired a seven-under-par 212. With rounds of 69,71 and 72, she was seven shots ahead of her nearest competitor, fellow Wildcat Cristina Baena. Earlier this month, Ochoa shot 149 (+3) to finish tied for ninth in the talent-laden field at the NCAA Preview in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

Ochoa broke or tied several Championship Course records on the way to medalist honors at the Dick McGuire Invitational. Ochoa's three-round total of 212 ties the 54-hole individual record held by former Wildcat Marisa Baena. Her two-round total of 140 also set a new individual 36-hole course record.

The freshman standout boasts a long list of accolades and honors. She reached the semifinals at the 1999 U.S. Women's Amateur and the quarterfinals in 2000. Ochoa claimed the Mexican Amateur Championship in 1999 and 2000. She has also won seven Mexican Junior National Championships, including five consecutive from 1990 to 1994.

Ochoa and the Wildcats next compete at the Stanford/Pepsi Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. on Oct. 20.
