TUCSON, Ariz. (Mar. 3, 2001) -- Baylor's Meredith Miller pitched a two-hitter to help pace the Bears to their second consecutive Saturday victory in Arizona's Hillenbrqand Invitational, 5-1 over Creighton.
Creighton broke up a no-hitter bid by Miller in the top of the sixth, and scored its run on an odd play with runners on second and third. Stacey Rybar was picked off second and in the ensuing rundown, Jenny Hunt scored from third.
Baylor catcher Ryan Stukel homered to start the scoring in the first, and the Bears added more on a two-run double by Kristen Lancaster in the second. Sarah Caudle and Lancaster singled in runs in the fifth.
Game 7 - Baylor 10, Indiana State 1
TUCSON, Ariz. (Mar. 3, 2001) -- The Baylor Bears collected 10 hits to beat Indiana State to win their first game in three tries at Arizona's Hillenbrand Invitational. ISU stayed winless at 0-3 in tourney play.
Baylor (20-6) scored in the top of the first when Naomi Fitzgerald led off with a single, stole second and scored when stacey Hundley beat out an infield hit and the throw to first sailed wide. Holly Fields led off the second with a home run to make it 2-0.
The Sycamores scored in the bottom of the fourth inning on a lead-off triple by Melanie Newnum and a RBI groundout by Stacey Sparger. BU pitcher Sarah Caudle held ISU to three hits.
Indiana State (3-4) hurt itself with four fielding errors plus misplayed a run-down situation with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth. The next Baylor batter walked to force in a run then Fitzgerald hit a two-run double to make it 7-1, with all three runs unearned. Nan Wilkins' three-run home run finished the scoring in the top of the seventh.
