DURHAM, N.C. - Inclement weather forced play to be suspended as of 3 p.m. EDT Friday at the 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championships. Play is scheduled to resume at 7:30 a.m. EDT Saturday with completion of the third round followed by the tournament's final 18 holes.

Currently, the University of Arizona men's golf team holds a six-stroke lead on the field through holes 8-10 of Friday's third round. At the time play was suspended, the Wildcats were seven-under par on the day and had increased the team lead by one stroke over second-place Florida. Arizona stands at 14-under par for the tournament, six strokes ahead of the Gators (-8).

Sophomore Ricky Barnes, who is at even par through eight holes of the third round, remains in the individual lead at 11-under. Making a charge Friday was freshman Chris Nallen, who is seven-under through nine holes. Nallen, the first-round leader, has moved into a tie for second place with Florida's Nick Gilliam at eight-under par for the tournament.

"I was hoping the weather would be so bad that they would call it off," joked head coach Rick LaRose. "It would be nice to have only 18 to go (tomorrow) but you can't control the weather. I think the committee (NCAA) has done a good job and has been really organized."

Junior Cody Beyer and sophomore Reid Hatley are each at even par on the day. Beyer currently stands at one-under for the tournament in a tie for 18th place, while Hatley is six-over and in a tie for 48th place. Freshman Andy Connell is two-over par on the day and is in 84th place.

The field was cut to the top 15 teams and nine individuals after 36 holes. The 2001 NCAA Men's Golf Championships are being contested at the Duke University Golf Course, a par 72, 7,045-yard facility. The event runs through Saturday.
