TUCSON--Arizona continued its unbeatable combination of torrid hitting and pitching to pound Kentucky, 12-1, in the Cats' Pepsi Softball Classic.
Freshman Jenny Gladding threw a two-hitter and the Cats knocked out 12 hits including three home runs. Gladding had a no-hitter until the fifth. Kentucky (3-6) is only the second team to scored on Arizona this year. It was UA's third mercy-rule contest in as many Classic games.
UA (13-0) took a quick 1-0 lead when Lauren Bauer singled, stole second and scored on a two-out, first-inning single by Leneah Manuma. Then two walks and a single in the top of the third loaded the bases for Bauer, who promptly hit UA's fourth grandslam in its last two games. Manuma followed with a two-run home run two batters later and it was UA 7-0.
Nicole Giordano hit a two-run double and Manuma clouted another two-run homer in the Cats' four-run fifth. Arizona pushed its team total to 35 home runs.
Game 11 -- New Mexico State vs. Arizona
TUCSON--Lindsey Collins' two-run single in the bottom of the sixth gave Arizona the mercy- rule margin of eight runs in a 9-1 victory over New Mexico State in the Pepsi Softball Classic.
The Cats overcame a slow start for their fourth consecutive eight-run rule victory in the tournament.
Arizona trailed for the first time in the year after NMSU took a 1-0 lead in the first. Lizette Olivares reached on an infield single and advanced when the throw skidded past the first baseman, then after a walk and a sacrifice bunt, scored on Heather Nobbe's single to center.
The lead was short lived, as Leneah Manuma's third home run of the day, a two-run shot into the pool beyod the centerfield fence, keyed a UA three-run rally in the bottom of the inning.
Lauren Bauer hit a two-run homer to center to extend UA's lead to 5-1 in the fourth. Mackenzie Vandergeest had an RBI double and Allison Andrade had an RBI single in UA's two-run fifth.
New Mexico State and Kentucky each scored a run against Arizona on Saturday, only the third game this year the Cats have given up runs. Nebraska scored four last weekend in an 11-4 loss to UA.
Game 12 -- Pacific vs. New Mexico State
TUCSON--Pacific came from behind twice to keep New Mexico State winless in Arizona's Pepsi Softball Classic tournament, winning 4-3.
The Tigers improved to 3-1 in the tourney and 5-3 overall. NMSU dropped to 0-4 and 3-12.
NMSU scored twice in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Amber Mosher and an RBI double by Heather Nobbe.
Pacific tied it in the third with RBI singles by Boni Kading and Brandy Thurman, and might have taken the lead but had runners thrown out at third and at second. Then NMSU's Judy Blok drove in Mosher with a single in the bottom of the inning to give New Mexico State a 3-2 lead.
But UOP came up with two unearned runs on successive hits after a fielding error to take a 4- 3 lead in the top of the fourth, and hung on for the victory.
Oklahoma State vs. Pacific
TUCSON -- Pacific pitcher Cindy Ball bore down to retire the last two Oklahoma State batters with two runs in scoring position to give the Tigers a narrow 3-2 victory over the Cowgirls in Arizona's Pepsi Softball Classic action Saturday.
Kelly Lowry homered to right field after Barbara Moody had led off earlier in the first inning to give Pacific a 2-0 lead. But OSU's Ryan Realmuto's RBI single scored Casey O'Neill in the third to cut the lead in half.
UOP ( 4-3) scored once in the fourth and OSU (3-5) put one across and had the bases loaded with one out in the fifth but didn't take advantage. Game 8 -- Bowling Green vs. Oklahoma State
Bowling Green vs. Oklahoma State
TUCSON -- Kara Wentworth and Lauren Bay combined for a one-hitter to shut out Bowling Green and lead Oklahoma State to a 2-0 victory in Arizona's Pepsi Softball Classic.
The Cowgirls scored an unearned run in the second on two hits and two BGSU fielding errors and added one in the third on Ryan Realmuto's RBI double to go up 2-0.
Wentworth pitched four innings, allowed the one hit and struck out eight. Bay pitched three innings of hitless ball and struck out five to earn a save.
OSU improved to 4-5 and the Falcons dropped to 1-2.
Kentucky vs. Bowling Green
TUCSON -- Lyndsey Angus' sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh drove in the winning run for Kentucky in a 3-2 victory over Bowling Green in Saturday action in Arizona's Pepsi Softball Classic.
Kentucky improved to 3-3. BGSU dropped to 1-3.
BGSU opened the scoring with an unearned run in the second when Nikki Rouhana walked, moved to third on an error and scored on Libby Voshell's two-out double. Kentucky answered in the top of the fourth when Angie Dal Pozzo tripled, then beat the throw to the plate on Rachel Friberg's grounder to short.
The Falcons regained the lead with an RBI single by Voshell in he fourth. Kentucky tied it at 2- 2 in the sixth when Friberg doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Andrea Eilertson's single.
