No. 60 Arizona Earns First Dual Match Win At Season Opener

TUCSON, Ariz. The University of Arizona men's tennis team won their first dual match of the season against Loyola Marymount University, 6-1, Friday, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. The Cats are now 1-2, overall while the LMU Lions drop to 0-5.

Arizona swept LMU in doubles play. In the No. 1 spot, junior Alex Aybar and senior Jean-Noel LaCoste defeated Erik Nelson-Kortland and Iman Nilipour, 8-3. Senior Alex Brown and freshman Tom Lloyd beat Leopold Graubig and Thad O'Grady, 8-5, at the No. 2 postition, while in the No. 3 spot senior Michel Stopa and sophomore Caleb Marquardt defeated Carsten Eisenbarth and Mahmoud Karim, 9-8(4).

In singles play the cats won 5 out of their 6 matches. In the No. 1 position Aybar defeated Nelson-Kortland, 6-0, 6-1, while LaCoste fell to Graubig, 6-2, 7-5.

In the No. 3 spot, Stopa earned a win against Eisenbarth, 4-6, 6-0, 7-6(2), and Marquardt beat Karim in the No. 4 position, 6-2, 6-0.

Lloyd, at the No. 5 spot defeated O'Grady, 6-1, 6-0, while at the No. 6 spot Brown earned a win against Nilipour, 7-6(3), 6-2.

The Wildcats will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 5, at noon, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center against UC Santa Barbara.
