Led by freshman Chris Nallen, who went 2-0 in his matches, No. 3 seed Arizona defeated No. 6 seed Northwestern, 3-2, in the opening round and No. 7 seed UNLV, 4-1, in the semifinals to advance to Sunday's championship match against No. 5 seed Georgia Tech.
Nallen, the only UA golfer to win both of his matches, earned a 1-up victory over Northwestern's David Shaffer in Saturday morning's quarterfinal to key the victory. After Ricky Barnes and Cody Beyer halved their matches, Nallen and Ben Clark, who won 2-up, earned victories to clinch the 3-2 win.
Nallen's dominating 4 and 2 win over UNLV's Calvin Kupeyan in the semifinals led the way to an easy 4-1 victory. Barnes chipped in with a 1-up win, while Beyer won 3 and 2. Hatley and Clark added halves to make it a 4-1 final.
On the women's side, top-seeded Arizona lost both its matches and will play for seventh place on Sunday. The UA women were defeated, 3-2, by No. 8 seed Georgia in the opening round and 4-1 by No. 4 seed Auburn in the consolation bracket.
The women will take on No. 7 seed Pepperdine tomorrow in the seventh-place consolation match.
