En route to the tournament-leading score, the Wildcat JV posted the lowest team total of the tournament with an opening-round 286. No other team in the 15-team field was within six shots of the Cats after the first round. Arizona's two-round total of 580 (+12) is two shots ahead of San Diego with 18 holes to play. Texas-El Paso (583), UC-Irvine (585) and tournament-host Long Beach State (587) round out the top five.
Leading the way for the Wildcats is senior Rob Anderson. Anderson stands in a tie for sixth place with a two-round total of 143 (+1). He is one of three UA golfers in the top 20. Also playing well for the Cats is Brandon Smith, who tallied a season-low 68 in the tournament's first round. Smith's total of 146 (+4) places him in a tie for 15th heading into Friday's final round. Air Force's Ben Leestma leads the tournament with a two-under-par total of 140.
Other Arizona performers include Brian Woolf, who is tied for 19th at 147 (+5), Tim Weis, who is tied for 25th at 148 (+6) and Ben Clark, who is tied for 35th place at 150 (+8).
The 49er Collegiate Classic is being contested at the Virginia Country Club, a par 71, 6,509-yard layout. The 54-hole event is hosted by Long Beach State University.
The Arizona varsity will next be in action on Nov. 3-5, at the Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C.
