(Game 8 - Southwest Texas State -- bye)

Game 9 - Arizona 5, Cal State Fullerton 4

TUCSON--Arizona weathered one of pitching ace Jennie Finch's less dominant starts of the year and hung on to beat Cal State Fullerton, 5-4, to give the Wildcats a chance for a 14th consecutive NCAA Regional championship.

Finch gave up a season-high 10 hits and struck out only four, her lowest total in a start this year. Arizona improved to 60-4 overall.

She turned a liner into a double play to end the game. Fullerton's Jodie Cox hit a two-run single in the top of the seventh to pull the Titans to within one. With runners on first and second, Amanda Hockett lined to Finch for the game-ending play. Hockett was three-for-four.

Arizona moved into the championsip round at 1 p.m. Sunday while CSUF (48-13) plays Southwest Texas State later Saturday night for the right to meet the Wildcats. The winner of the late Saturday game would have to beat UA twice on Sunday, with a second game at 3:30 p.m. if necessary.

The Titans missed a scoring opportunity in the first with runners on second and third. Julie Watson and Jen Topping singled and moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Monica Lucatero, but third baseman Toni Mascarenas made a nice play on a grounder and shortstop Allison Andrade went into the hole to backhand a liner.

Arizona answered with leadoff singles by Lauren Bauer and Nicole Giordano and a sacrifice by Mascarenas to put two runners in scoring position. Jennie Finch hit a sacrifice fly for the first run and CSUF second baseman Shawna Robinson dropped a soft liner to allow a 2-0 lead.

Amanda Hockett hit her sixth homer of the season to cut the lead to 2-1. It was only the seventh earned run scored off Finch and the fourth home run she has allowed in 29 games.

Mascarenas' two-run double to right-center pushed UA's lead to 4-1 and chased CSUF starter Gina Oaks (19-7).

CSUF closed the gap in the top of the fourth, scoring one run on a two-out single by Amanda Hockett.

Once again, Arizona answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame. Two singles and a walk with one set the table for an RBI ground out by Leneah Manuma.

Arizona won its 47th consecutive game at Hillenbrand Stadium. A crowd of 2,286 was in attendance.

Game 10 - Southwest Texas 4, Cal State Fullerton 3

Post game quotes

TUCSON--Southwest Texas beat Cal State Fullerton, 4-3, and stayed alive in NCAA Region 1 softball Saturday night to set up a match with top-ranked Arizona in Sunday's championship round. CSUF was eliminated.

The Bobcats will have to beat the Wildcats (60-4) twice on their own field, Hillenbrand Stadium, where the Cats have a 47-game home winning streak dating to early April 2000.

A three-run home run by Elizabeth Wissell staked the Bobcats (54-11) to a lead in the first.

After picking up a run on an RBI single by Kristy Halagarda in the second, Cal State Fullerton (48-14) tied the game in the third on a two-run homer by Yasmin Mossadeghi.

SWTSU regained the lead in the fifth when Sarah Youngdale led off with a double, moved to third on a sac bunt by Stephanie Hughes and scored on Wissel's single to the hole between short and third.

The Titans had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, but Bobcats pitcher Nicole Neuerburg (23-7), who picked up the victory in three innings of relief, got Jenny Topping to ground out. In all, the Titans stranded eight runners.
