Match #1
#15 Arizona (0-0) vs. Texas-El Paso (0-0)
Sept. 1, 1999

THIS WEEK: No. 15 Arizona opens its eighth season under head coach David Rubio with a single match at Texas-El Paso Sept. 1 before playing host to the Embassy Suites Wildcat Classic in Tucson Sept. 3-4. Kent State, Sacramento State, San Diego and Santa Clara comprise the rest of the five-team tournament field (see schedule below). The Cats are 13-0 all-time against their first five 1999 opponents.

WILDCAT NOTES: The Cats' opening match at Texas-El Paso will mark the 200th of David Rubio's Arizona career ... Arizona is scheduled to make three television appearances this season on Fox Sports Net: at UCLA (9/24); vs. Washington State (10/8); and at Stanford (10/15) ... Seven of the Cats' 1999 opponents are ranked in the AVCA preseason poll, including three of the top four: Stanford (No. 2); Nebraska (3); Hawaii (4); BYU (7); UCLA (10); San Diego (18); and USC (21) ... Arizona is third in the Pac-10 in league victories over the last three years with 34, trailing only Stanford (52) and USC (41).

PRESEASON RANKINGS: Pac-10 coaches voted Arizona third in their annual preseason poll. That is the Cats' best ever finish in the coaches' poll. Arizona has finished better than predicted in five of head coach David Rubio's seven seasons. Here's where the Cats have been picked in the past, along with their finish:

In 1994, the Cats were ranked 16th prior to the season, while in '97, they came in 20th. Arizona's best preseason ranking came in 1987, when it started the season at No. 11.

JUNIOR NATIONALS: Sophomore Dana Burkholder and freshman Lisa Rutlege will miss the last week of preseason practice and the first week of the regular season representing the United States at the Junior World Games in Saskatoon and Edmonton, Canada, Aug. 28-Sept. 5. Arizona is one of only two schools (Stanford) with two players on the US Junior National Team. Sixteen nations will be competing for the 10th Junior World Championship.

HEAD COACH DAVID RUBIO: David Rubio (Cal State Northridge '82) is in his eighth season as head coach of the Cats and his 13th year overall. He is 123-76 (.618) with Arizona and has led UA to five NCAA Tournament appearances in the last six years. He ranks fifth in Pac-10 history in winning percentage among coaches. Rubio is 243-141 (.633) overall. Rubio has led the Cats to three consecutive and four total 20-win seasons. He's coached eight All-Pac-10 performers and eight academic all-conference athletes.

ARIZONA VS. UTEP: Arizona is 3-0-1 all-time against Texas-El Paso, though the two schools have not met in 17 years ... The Cats won their only match at UTEP, in 1977.
