TUCSON, Ariz. - Street and Smith's college basketball annual announced Friday that it has selected the University of Arizona as its preseason No. 1 team for the 2000-01 season.

The Wildcats, who return all five starters and 10 letterwinners from last season's 27-7 club, topped the publication's preseason top 25. According to Street and Smith's College Basketball 2000, Arizona features "the best and most experienced lineup in the country." Duke, North Carolina, Michigan State and Stanford round out the top five.

Wildcat guard Jason Gardner was named a second-team preseason All-America by the sports annual, now in its 60th year of publication. Last year, Garnder averaged 12.6 points, 3.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game in earning National Freshman-of-the-Year honors from the United States Basketball Writers Association, Basketball Times, Basketball News, and Dick Vitale. He was the only Arizona player named to the publication's preseason All-America squad.

The Wildcats open the 2000-01 campaign at the Maui Invitational on Nov. 20 against Chaminade.
