Birmingham, Ala. The University of Arizona men's golf team placed seventh at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, which was held at the Old Overton Club (Par-71, 6,958). After entering today's final round in seventh place, the Wildcats shot a 4-over-par 288 and finished with a 9-under-par 855 total.
Clemson won the tournament after having to go into a two-hole playoff with UNLV. Both the Tigers and Rebels finished regulation with 29-under-par 835 totals. Georgia was third at 838, Houston was fourth with a 840 and Oklahoma State rounded out the top-five at 849.
Oklahoma State's Charles Howell won the medalist honors by one shot after carding a 12-under-par 201. He beat out Arizona State's Paul Casey and Houston's Andy Sanders, who placed second with 11-under-par 211s.
Arizona's top individual finishers were senior Derek Gillespie and freshman Ricky Barnes, who both tied for 18th place with a 2-over-par 215s, Gillespie shot rounds of 72-71-72, while Barnes had rounds of 73-71-71. The rest of the Arizona lineup included freshman Reid Hatley, who tied for 23rd at 3-over-par 216 (72-70-74), freshman Patrick Norris, who tied for 36th at 6-over-par 219 (81-69-69) and senior Scott Moore, who tied for 42nd with a 8-over-par 221 total (75-76-70).
