TUCSON, Ariz. The 54th-ranked University of Arizona Men's tennis team defeated Loyola Marymount, 5-2, Sunday at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
The Cats swept the Lions in doubles play to pick up their first point of the match. At the No. 2 spot, the duo of sophomore Tom Lloyd and Whi Kim clinched the doubles point for the Wildcats by defeating Johannes Asuja and Beau Berglund, 8-4.
In singles the Cats earned four match points while the Lions earned two. Arizona's first win in singles play came at the No. 1 spot when junior Steven Capriati flew by Leopold Graeubig, 6-1, 6-1. This win marks a four-match winning streak for Capriati. At the No. 2 spot freshman Carl Hagman fell short to Carsten Bitschkus, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(7), while senior Jari Niskala clinched the match for the Cats at the No. 4 spot by beating Beau Berglund, 6-3, 6-0.
The Wildcats travel to Irvine, Calif. Friday, Feb. 2, to play UC Irvine at 1:30 p.m.
